Lately I have been struggling with what the practice of yoga really is in our society. For some, it means to tone our body and release muscles in a hot room and for others it may be about finding a deeper connection to their self and embracing the power of our own voice.
As I turn to my truth and connect to my heart, I find it to be a mix of both. Over the past 8 years, my practice has transitioned into the unexplainable. How can I explain to someone who loves the physical practice that I only do the physical when my body craves it? That to me, my practice is to dance, sing, play harmonium, breathe, sit in a pose to learn to just be and to do tonal techniques not for the look of the muscle but to make my body stronger to help me take on the effects of working at a desk or being trapped in a car?
I’m finding as I tune into myself and teach what I practice that there are students out there searching like me and they’re ready for the practice that I bring them. I can only teach from my heart and find the souls who are ready for what I call the practice to awaken the soul. The practice to look deep within ones heart and ask the hard questions to find true freedom and to use holistic techniques to release the stress that has been allowed to build up in the body over the years.
So in the end, isn’t yoga about waking up the sleeping soul? Awakening to release all the stories, anxiety, stress and hopelessness that the world has presented us and to start to see the world in state of love. Every day is a challenge and a battle with ourselves but we should come to whatever part of yoga that speaks to us to find some sort of freedom or release whether it is physical or mental. To go beyond the Instagram postings, the need to show off power poses like handstand and to preach to the masses in a way that only turns the ego on instead of getting our truth out.
This blog will explore all accepts of yoga and answers that fateful question, how do you awaken a soul that has been sleeping so long? I look forward to sharing the truth about bhakti, the meaning of yoga and how we can get through this thing called life by being true to ourselves.

Many of you ask about what class to start with, how are they different. Let's start with a little more info about Inner Sun Hatha and Inner Sun Vinyasa...This is a class I developed over time that comes from a variety of styles that speak to me in my personal practice, most recently my training in Prana Flow Yoga with Aubee Saia and BhaktImmersion with Sean Johnson. Class may include Bhakti (devotional) teachings, mantra (chant), pranayama (breath work), Kundalini (the yoga of awakening) and meditation so you can delve deeper in the spiritual practice of yoga. More time and space for exploration & contemplation will help you cultivate inner and outer strength to help you awaken your "inner sun" or spiritual heart. Inner Sun Hatha is typically a slower flow and Inner Sun Flow is usually a more "power" yoga class. Both will show variations for all levels with assists. I invite you to come and try this class that will inspire you both on and off the mat! Inner Sun Hatha meets 8:30am on Friday, Inner Sun Flow is 9:15am on Saturday, 4:15pm on Monday.
As my friend Debra Gehrke and I were planning our Elements of Grace and Brilliance workshop we discussed how many of people are really feeling out of sorts right now. For my first blog I would like to share some thoughts from Debra with you and invite you to share what you are feeling and sign up for our workshop on November 3rd!
"Are you feeling full swing in the midst of major shift. It's fall in Wisconsin…a time when things begin to fall away, returning to the earth, becoming one with all that is. It's fall, a time when the days get shorter…and things get darker.
Nature often mirrors or reflects symbolically in other aspects of our lives. We're hearing it all around us… Everything's falling apart. Things seem to be dying off, breaking away… And you know, life is like that. Change is the only constant there is.
So, what are we going to do about it? Are we going to wallow in the dark… Or are we going to seek the light…no better yet, are we going to BE the light? It's our choice.
The writing is on the wall… There's never been a better time to honor ourselves, to dig deep and recognize the heart and soul of who we really are. Times are changing. Indeed. And we can feel empowered through the shifts when we are in touch with who we really are, on a soul-ular level…when we breathe into the LIGHT and use it to catalyze powerfully positive transformation.
Want to choose LIGHT? Want to choose feeling empowered over anything else? Want to come into deeper relationship with your heart's and soul's longing and purpose? Want to commit to shining bright in this world, and feeling better than ever before by doing so?
Then let's do this! Come and join us on Sunday, November 3 from 12:30 - 3:30 at Inner Sun Yoga Studio in Oshkosh.
Let's ignite the LIGHT within and stoke the fires of your Brilliance in harmony with nature's elements…tuning your inner energy centers, enlivening your BEingness on bright, expansive levels."
Register now, deadline is Wednesday, October 30. We're excited to share this afternoon with you!!
